Star Guard
Boom! You’re dead. Boom! You’re dead. Boom! You’re dead. Boom! You’re dead. Boom! You’re dead. Boom! You’re dead. Boom! You’re dead.
Star Guard is a fantastic little action platformer game by Vacuum Flowers, who apparently specialize on pixellated, old-school looking games that kick ass.
The difficulty on this one slowly ramps up from moderate to brutal, and that’s just on the easy mode. Nevertheless, the game is never unfair, and in the easy mode you get infinite lives and always respawn close to your latest deathplace, and most of your foes remain slain, so with a little patience you can eventually force your way through each level.
There are secrets and end-bosses, and all in all it’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience that is enhanced (rather than diminished) by its simple jump/shot control scheme.
You are encouraged to try it ASAP! Available for PC and Mac, for free, download it here.

I agree, this is a pretty fun game. I like that they give you little helpers, though stupid, that help you take out the bad guys. I think I finally gave up somewhere in level five (there were the things falling from the ceiling in between land mines on the ground) when I had already lost 21 lives. At that point, my mind was too tired to keep up w/anymore. Thanks for the suggestion.
